A good teacher can speak passionately about a topic for hours. A great teacher can get students to do the same. Effective learning is a two-way street. And while much can be said in favor of traditional methods of teaching, they are nothing without some initial curiosity in the student. The transfer of knowledge, the giving and the accepting, must be complete. If there is a problem on either end, the quality of the education will suffer.

Teachers cannot lecture in the same way that politicians equivocate on the stump. Recycled and refined messages that please a general audience will not reach the individual student. Each person comes into a classroom with a distinct background and set of interests; it is not likely that they will each be stimulated by an all-purpose lecture from an uninspired professor. Teachers need to be attentive, to know their audience.
